ever heard of webinars?

usually i consider myself ahead of the game when it comes to cool things technology and what’s the new fad and such. every now and again, however, i do have a lapse in relevant-ness from time to time. and apparently this was such a time.

i got an email the other day from fohonline talking about the latest news in the world of pro audio. i usually just skim over it, and move on to more pressing things like twitter. well, this particular one had an article about digidesign doing “webinars.” (that would be a web-seminar for those of you having trouble. and for jaron.) the guy doing the series of webinars is robert scovill (longtime live sound engineer whose credits include tom petty and matchbox 20), who has been working with digidesign for several years, and in my opinion they’ve developed the sexiest digital console out there. period. if you don’t believe me, see for yourself here or here. i’m not gonna get too geeky with it, but not only is it sound incredible, but they’ve done something no one else has. it’s called “virtual soundcheck.” basically meaning with the click of a button, you flip over to last night’s show or last sunday’s service and it’s like the band was in the room. what an incredible volunteer tool for churches. if i had 40k to drop right at this moment, i would definitely drop it on the profile. and if i had 54k, would definitely drop it on the big daddy d-show. what’s more attractive than a freelance engineer with his own console? video shoot today..

we shot a video today. we had planned to do this prior to this week, however we never got around to doing it like we talked about. so we decided to take the idea we had previously, and tweak it to match nic’s talk tomorrow evening. for a little background of our shoot, we shot on “the drag,” which is guadalupe street in austin right on the ut campus. so here’s a few things i observed during our shoot:

1. it was hot

2. it’s funny how people deny you. from every different excuse possible, to not even acknowledging your existence. i’ve never seen so many people that couldn’t wait to get back to their job. i didn’t know so many people were excited about their place of work. we even got a “no. i’m on vacation” response.

3. we started our questions real vague, then we got more pointed as we went on. usually not really introducing what we were doing, to try and get the most real, authentic answers possible. when people heard the name “God,” their whole demeanor changed. their tone of voice, facial expressions, everything. i’m capturing all the video now, about to edit it all down. but depending on which responses make the cut, watch for when i post the final so you can see and hear what i’m talking about. some of the responses should be intriguing to you.

cool take on technology

this is a piece of an article collide magazine posted early, for the sheer fact it’s deep and the guy might have a point. you might have to read it a few times to really get it.

I think when the technology becomes not only the focal point but the prerequisite, we’ve cheapened not only the art, but our humanity. I’m not against technology. My design firm is filled with high-end technical equipment. But we first practice the fundamental craft of design. We think about things like composition, scale, balance, rhythm, contrast, hospitality, flow. It takes years to learn to master these elements. Technology often presents us with the illusion that you need not think about these things. Yet nothing could be further from the truth if you want your efforts to express something of the human experience. I’m a big fan of technology in service of humanity. It’s the reverse that cheapens us.

that will make you think won’t it. i had been debating on whether to subscribe, this sealed the deal and i submitted my subscription today.

if you read jaron’s blog like i told you to do, you already know that camp 7/8 was a good week. i would say it rivaled the week we had with high school. i already knew going in things would be a lot less stress and low key. less people were coming, less logistics, and just not as much of a headache. well that may partly be true, but that doesn’t mean God can’t work right?

well He did work. we took a great group of kids, the kids i’d rather hang out with instead of just about any of our high school kids. and whats even more crazy, probably 90% of them didn’t grow up in church. and to see them worship is cool. to see kids from both churches experience a kind of worship that they never have been apart of is cool. i wish we could’ve had one more night. if we would’ve been able to build off of the Wednesday night we had, i can’t imagine what God would’ve done. (i’ve always thought junior high and high school camps need 5 days, preteen get 4). after every camp i’ve ever done, i usually go check out the bands myspace and see people leave comments about how awesome they were. usually this makes me feel like i did awesome as well(because if they sound awesome, that means i did good right? duh.) i read myspace blogs just yesterday about how it was some of these kids best week ever, nothing really on the band’s thing (except for me. ha). it was about what God did. so needless to say, it seems to me like these kids get where the week came from. the experiences they had, they know it wasn’t from a band, or speaker, or from anybody else involved. it was about what God did. and to me thats cool. in church today several of the kids we took brought their families with them to church. that tells me something clicked during the week. cool to be apart of.

mac or pc? which way to go?

one of the blogs i read is jason bedell who is creative arts pastor at forefront. he wrote 6 different posts lately entitled “the great church debate: the mac vs. pc debate for churches.” obviously this caught my attention because i’m a mac lover stuck in a pc world. if you’re stuck trying to figure out which way to go, read these. he offers good points. so here are each post:

what my week holds…

we’re doing camp 7/8 this week which is our junior high camp on the lake. it should be fun. i’ve never been, bur from what i’ve heard there is no internet and cell phone reception is sparse. so….that means it’s gonna be a LOONNGG week. no internet and no tweets. but i’ll see what i can do..also gonna be a tough week as far as getting work accomplished, 90% of the things i have to do to make things happen over the course of camp happens because of the internet. so it should be interesting.

summer is winding down, that means school is right around the corner. not really looking forward to it i must say. dont get me wrong i wish summer would never end, but work i am looking a bit forward to.

i have been exploring other options to figure out if there’s something else i can do with myself other than what i’ve been doing the last 2 yrs, and i really have a laundry list a mile long of options(which doesn’t help matters at all). there’s so much i think i need to get done or places i think i need to work to hone the skills i think i need. notice a trend yet? ok i’ll help you out…i think i think i think…i just think too much sometimes. especially selfishly. so i’m pretty sure i know where i’ll be in the fall (unless God changes that in between now and then) and there are a few different things that are in the works for spring and summer 2009. some of it boring, some of it crazy exciting. just not sure where im headed yet. it’s been an interesting last few months, not to mention the last few years, searching and trying to figure out what God is up to. and to be honest i still really don’t have a great grasp on things, but i know what i’m wired for. figuring out how to use that in the best way possible is something i’m still trying to figure out.

a pictoral weekend mind dump

saturday we went shopping kind of. more like errand running. and i’ve been following the iphone release very closely. reading it on blogs, looking at the new itunes app store ect. i finally moseyed on over to the at&t store and checked the new 3g out. and OH MY GOSH IT IS SICK. and when i say the word sick i mean gross. when i say gross i mean good. it is awesome. i’ve been trying for a year to watch youtube on my phone. so far no dice. so this pic is me, in the store watching my mission ltx video on the phone. and wadda you know who appeared when i took the pic….mark tate. that dude happens to be in EVERY SINGLE PICTURE in the article from the local paper. guess he’s not camera shy. louie giglio even commented on nic’s blog about this vid. go peep it.

i present to you exhibit a. instead of driving range, jenna, jaron and i went bowling. this picture is game 1 and my score is at the top, jenna is in the middle, jaron is at the bottom. notice if you will the 2 strikes in a row in my last frame, to beat jaron by 2 pins. somebody owes me ice cream at marble slab.

exhibit b. or game 2. jenna apparently had been fooling us game 1, and she kicked it into high gear. notice her winning score by 2 pins over jaron. i’m sure she will blog about it at some point so go check hers out if you will. and i know you will.

i just thought it would be cool to take a pic of some of our shure assortment. i do love the stuff. in my shootouts thus far, shure has won BY FAR. other stuff i’ve heard just isn’t as smooth for whatever reason. so if you were wondering, i’m partial to the folks at shure. i throw them a lot of business, and hopefully we’ll throw them some more in the very near future.

dark knight and the insanity of heath ledger

team spider monkey plus jo and jenna minus the vacationing dustin went and saw dark knight last night at midnight. i was WORN OUT from going to schlitterbahn all day, so ialmost fell asleep a few times. but it was good and i definately plan to go check it out on the imax. i’m not going to give anything away, but heath ledger is CRAZY good. go watch it. i even had a gotham city pizza i’ve been so into the movie.

trying to lay low this weekend before camp 7/8 next wk. so far its not working at all.
